Thunder and lightning swept through Wall Street last week in the form of a Chinese IPO. The stock popped for an opening-day gain of 72.9 percent. And guess what? Other Chinese companies started jumping onto the new-issues calendar.

With the summer of 2010 fading into memory, attention is turning to fall’s IPO market. If the pipeline is any indication, things could get busy.

There wasn’t much barroom bragging when the curtain came down on the IPO market at summer’s end. The report card for the year to date was not what bankers would like take home for their parents’ (or shareholders’) signatures. (Yes, thoughts of forgery or burning come to mind.)

Wall Street is all about numbers and trends. Naturally, the past is no indication of the future, but it’s better than no guideline at all. Nevertheless, the U.S. IPO market’s 2010 trend has been giving off some interesting numbers.

Most of Wall Street’s syndicate desks have stopped burning the midnight oil in the two-week lull before the Labor Day holiday weekend. However, not all the lights have been dimmed. There is one deal on this week’s IPO calendar and another the following week. Each is a real estate investment trust, better known as a REIT.

The road to Labor Day starts on the first of August and Wall Street investment bankers have until the middle of the month to get their IPOs done. Then they shut their doors and hang up the sign “Closed for Vacation.”

As the IPO Express pulls into the depot this week, it’ll unload the last of July’s deals and pick up the first of August’s passengers. But don’t look now – the waiting line is growing for August’s run through the new-issue valley.

The IPO market is back in the saddle after its traditional July 4^th holiday break. The filings are building, the calendar is filling up and there are a few “little doggies” that could be worth carving out from the herd.
